വിശദമായ വിവരണം - Detailed Explanation

Nowadays, we use വിശദം to mean detailed. It comes from വി + ശദം, meaning cut apart or scattered. Of course, when we detail or elaborate something we cut the main idea apart into pieces and explain it.

What about വിവരണം? As we saw in Holes in Knowledge, this comes from the root വിവൃ = to open up. Thus, വിവരണം is the act of opening up.

Putting it together, വിശദമായ വിവരണം means cutting something apart and exposing it in a detailed manner, a detailed explanation indeed.

ഇഷ്ടമുള്ള വാക്കുകൾ

A common noun transformation rule in Sanskrit has -ഏശം, or -ഏഷം  transforming to -ഇഷ്ടം. This changes the meaning of the noun to "that which has something" or "that which has been done something".  Many common words in Malayalam follow this etymology.

 

Consider the famous title ചിന്താവിഷ്ടയായ സീത. The first word ചിന്താവിഷ്ട = ചിന്ത + ആവിഷ്ട means "consumed with thought". The second component ആവിഷ്ട comes from ആവേശം. 

The current meaning of ആവേശം is enthusiam or energy. However, originally വേശം meant entry. So ആവേശം means to enter all over or to infuse. Thus, ആവിഷ്ട means one who has been possesed with the feeling making ചിന്താവിഷ്ട mean one who has been possed with thoughts or worries. 

There are other similar examples:

ക്ലേശം (difficulty)  -> ക്ളിഷ്ടം (that which is difficult)

ശേഷം (after) -> ശിഷ്ടം (remainder)

ആശ്ലേഷം (embrace) -> ആശ്ലിഷ്ടം (that which is embraced)

വേശം (entry) -> വിഷ്ടം (that which is entered, crossbeam)

ശ്ലേഷം (pun)  -> ശ്ലിഷ്ടം (punny)

ഇതിനു ശേഷം "പുഞ്ചിരിച്ചു പുത്തനൊളി പരത്തി" എന്നു പറയുന്നതും ഉപമതന്നെ. ചന്ദ്രനെപ്പോലെ എന്നോ മറ്റോ ഉപമാനം പറയാത്തതിനാലും പോലെ എന്ന ഉപമാവാചകമില്ലാത്തതിനാലും ലുപ്‌തോപമ.

അവസാനത്തെ രണ്ടു വരികളിൽ അതിശയോക്തിയും ഉണ്ടെന്നത് സ്പഷ്ടം.

Holes in knowledge

The contemporary meaning of വിവരം is knowledge, news, education, etc.

Did you know that the original (Sanskrit) meaning is hole?

വിവരം comes from the Sanskrit root വിവൃ which originally means to open up, to uncover etc. It is the same root where വിവൃതം = open comes from.

Thus, വിവരം means opening or hole and also opening up or expansion. This later became morphed into exposition and elaboration.

Nowadays it just means knowledge!

What is the opposite of a cirlce?

Answer: വിട്ടം

Explanation:

The word വിട്ടം is the തത്ഭവം of വിഷ്ടം, which comes from Sanskrit വിശതി, meaning to enter or to go through. Thus വിഷ്ടം = വേശിക്കപ്പെട്ടത് , something that goes through.

Apparently, this comes from ancient architecture. വിട്ടം is the rafter that goes across (like a diameter) a circle (വട്ടം).

Thus  a വട്ടം goes around, whereas വിട്ടം goes across.

Wandering around in a forest

Consider the following words:

പര്യടനം = touring around
ഭിക്ഷാടനം = wandering around begging
ദേശാടനം = traveling around places

If you suspected they all came from possibly the same root, your suspicion would be right.

പര്യടനം = പരി + അടനം
ഭിക്ഷാടനം = ഭിക്ഷ + അടനം
ദേശാടനം = ദേശ + അടനം

The word അടനം means traveling around. It comes from the Sanskrit root "at". In Sanskrit, അടതി = he/she travels.

Another word that comes from the same root is അടവി. It means forest. Forest is called അടവി because once can wander around in a forest.
